Apple MacBook Pro Fastest Core Duo Laptop on the Market

The Register recently released some benchmarks showing that a 2.16 GHz Core Duo MacBook Pro is the fastest Core Duo laptop currently available.

“The site measured the 2.16GHz Core Duo-based MacBook Pro running through a series of Windows XP-native Photoshop CS2 scripts in 1m 10s - better than a 1.66GHz Core Duo-based Mac Mini (1m 56s) and a 2GHz Core Duo-based iMac (1m 25s). You’d expect that kind of difference given the different CPU speed grades. However, the site links to a set of tests carried out by PC Magazine on an array of Wintel Core Duo notebooks from Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Gateway. Only one came close: the Acer, with a score of 1m 11s; the others generated scores of 1m 52s to 1m 55s, all slower than the iMac.”

So this show that Apple knows what they’re doing when it comes to the hardware.

You can boot Windows XP on a Mac

Blanka and Narf have won the prize of $13,854 for figuring out how to boot Windows XP on a iMac Core Duo. People have successfully installed and booted Windows on all Intel Macs available on the market.

This could be a great tool for those people who would like to use OS X, but still need to run the odd Windows application.

The next step will be what’s called virtualization, which would be able to run Windows apps inside of OSX without very much of a speed hit. The holy grail would be the ability to run Windows Apps seamlessly inside Mac OS X. Like used to happen with Classic apps inside OS X.

Apple announces new products

On February 28th 2006 Apple announced three new products, two of them were iPod related and the third was a updated Macintosh.

First, the Mac Mini was updated to include the new Intel platform.
The Specs:
For $599

  • 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo processor
  • 2MB L2 Cache
  • 667MHz Frontside Bus
  • 512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
  • 60GB Serial ATA hard drive
  • Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
  • Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0
  • Apple Remote

For $799

  • 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor
  • 2MB L2 Cache
  • 667MHz Frontside Bus
  • 512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
  • 80GB Serial ATA hard drive
  • Double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0
  • Apple Remote
They also released the iPod Hi-Fi
It’s basically a speaker system for your iPod. It will retail with $349. Alot of after market accesories manufacturers (like Bose) might be a little angry about this.
Lastly,
they announced new leather cases for the 5G iPod and the iPod Nano. they are $99 which frankly, I think is far too expensive for a simple case.
