Matt Beckwith lives in Northern California with his wife of 14 years and their two daughters and considers himself a typical mac user. A relatively recent slider, Matt went from buying his first iPod in early 2004 to an eMac for his kids, a G4 15″ PowerBook, a 17″ iMac for the kids and more iPods than there are people living in his home. Matt enjoys recording music, creating home movies and maintaining his family’s website (http://beckwithweb.com). He also spends a lot of time cycling the amazing back roads in the central valley and east bay area.
Quality Versus Quantity, by Matt Beckwith
Amazing! That was the first thing that came to mind after reading about the iPhone. Absolutely amazing! After the recent emotional roller-coaster, which was only compounded by Brian Lam’s infamous “I guarantee it. It isn’t what I expected at all…” comment, I had given up all hope that we would see a phone at Macworld.
Then I started thinking about what Ken Ray said after the Gizmodo story: “Maybe it’s something more, something smarter…” Each time I convinced myself that there would be no iPhone I heard Ken’s voice in my head. With yesterday’s Wall Street Journal article promising a phone, the jitters began again; I carry a Razr and a Blackberry and detest them both and have been waiting for something more, something smarter.
Then it happened and I would hold my breath no more.
The phone was nothing like I expected, but I should have expected more. It is everything I ever hoped Apple would introduce in a phone. Sleek, with almost no buttons, a killer user interface, this phone is a segment killer; the iPhone cannot be called a smart phone, it’s way beyond that! Oh yeah, Apple TV was also announced.
Did I mention the iPhone? Call me a fan-boy and accuse me of being over dramatic, I don’t care! Have you seen this phone? Did you see how Steve scrolled through the address book? Or, how you can effortlessly listen to voicemail messages in any order?
At the end of the keynote (I followed the details on tuaw.com) I felt somewhat disappointed. The emotion reminded me of Christmas as a child. One year, I got two big gifts instead of the usual, 10 or so smaller ones. I threw a fit. My parents scolded me and gave me the speech about quality versus quantity. I was selfish then and I realize after finally watching the entire keynote that I am being selfish now, too. The shock over lack of quantity should not drown out the amazing quality of what we did get. Have you seen this iPhone? It syncs in iTunes!
I was wrong on practically every single one of my predictions and I barely made a dent in my Macworld Keynote BINGO card but who cares, we are finally getting the iPhone!
I’ll be at Macworld on Thursday. The iPhone is being shown in a glass display case, which is still more than enough reason to take the day off of work and get out to San Francisco.
