AppleTV and Audiobooks

Filed under: Hardware Reviews — George Starcher @ 3:08 am

I just got back from Europe. While I was there I saw the AppleTV in the Regent Street Apple Store in London. I knew I had to have one as soon as I got back home. Sure enough I picked up one yesterday (the day after I got back). It was as easy to setup as everyone says. But here is one thing I have run into. I have the Harry Potter audiobooks I purchased through iTunes. But I also have an Audible subscription. None of my Audible audiobooks show up on the AppleTV. I guess even though audiobooks purchased through iTunes come from Audible, ones directly from Audible are considered third party unsupported files. This does make sense once I thought about it since they are in Audible’s format if you get them straight from Audible and protected AACs if you get them from iTunes.

Complete My Album

After some recent rumors and speculation, Apple officially announced the “Complete My Album” feature today. Finally, purchasers of single tracks will not have to buy duplicate tracks when later deciding to purchase the entire album. iTunes will credit 99 cents toward the complete album for each individual song that was purchased if the album was purchased within 180 days of the singles.

The great news is that, for the next 90 days, Apple will honor the “Complete My Album” credit for any singles purchased on iTunes, regardless of when you bought them!  The Apple website has a link to the “Complete My Album” page on iTunes which will scan your account for purchased singles and calculate exactly how much your discounted price is for each complete album. Having the ability to sort by price quickly showed some full albums I might want to add to my library.

CMA

I have purchased a lot of full albums and audiobooks on iTunes and was actually surprised that I had 82 individual tracks.

So, if you buy some singles and have avoided buying full albums because of the double paying penalty now is a great time to re-visit the iTunes store.

Need a good reason to play with GarageBand?

by: Matt Beckwith, Associate Editor

As reported earlier this week on Mac OS Ken and The Unofficial Apple Weblog, Nine Inch Nails released another one of their songs, Survivalism, as a GarageBand file.  If you have GarageBand 3 and have not had a chance to use it, now is the time to dig in.

NIN in GB

With 18 individual tracks, this is a good example of how a song can be put together using GarageBand and as the band’s website says, “You now have the ability to completely reconstruct / deconstruct Survivalism any way you choose.”

Visit the band’s website at http://www.nin.com/current/ to download the file yourself. Then, experiment by adding effects, taking out instruments or adding some of your own.

If you happen to get the error message that the song cannot be played live (as I often do on my 1.67GhZ G4 PowerBook) you should search the GarageBand help file for “optimizing GarageBand performance”. For me, what works best is to make sure that I close any other applications that are running that are not being used and then change my “Optimize for” preference in the Audio/MIDI section of GarageBand preferences to “Maximum number of simultaneous tracks”.

Have fun.

Check Out Computer Glasses (see better for free)

When you are old like me you may need Computer Glasses. This is a nice free program by Custom Solutions of Maryland that has as they describe “useful and challenging freeware software for Macintosh (OS 10.2 or later) and Windows (XP) platforms.”

Well this one is pretty cool. It will magnify anything on your screen. You can set it to slight, medium, large and largest. Each setting provides increasing magnification of a section of what is on your screen.

This is very useful to old fogies like me, and really good to find imperfections in photographs etc. Give it a try and comment on what you think.
