All’s Well that Apple’s Well

Well. . . I think the “iMac that went wrong” saga is over.

After the iMac did not ship yesterday as promised by the Apple on-line store, I decided that perhaps the Apple Ninjas just did not want me to have an iMac.

I called the local Apple store in Rancho Cucamonga “Victoria Gardens”and spoke with Amy (who turned out to be my Apple Angel). I asked her what the best configuration on an iMac they had was. She told me , and it was not even close to what I wanted. So I then asked what she had in the way of a Mac Pro. (here are FlickrPics too)

Amy proceeded to very patiently listen to my every need, get all my questions and provide me with the same corporate discount I could get at the on-line store.

I won’t bore you (anymore) with the details in witting, but let’s just say that Amy, her boss Carlos and the store manager Denise went out of their way to cut me a deal that I could not pass.

Below are the details of my new MacPro\23″ Cinema Display system, which by the way cost me about $1,200 more than the old one, but the service that I got from the Rancho Cucamonga “Victoria Garden”store , and the ability to look them in the eyes and know they cared, was worth every penny.

The On-Line Store could have had this profit, but they don’t. Amy, Carlos and Denise do. Thanks to all of you who followed this MacTale all the way to what I hope is truly the end and I can get back to enjoying my new Apple.

So Victor, are you saying ther local Apple store DID carry out the upgrades for you in the end? The forum threads seem to think an Apple store can’t do this sort of work..?

Congratulations Victor – it is an awesome machine – I am also looking to upgrade to Mac Pro from my iMac 24″ (although I do not have any problems with it – but once you go Mac – you just can get enough I guess)

Looking forward to hear about your experience with Mac Pro in upcoming podcasts.

    All the best

Neat… What are you going to do with the iMac? Did you cancel it it?

That is great how it all worked out. I think you should have had the MacPro from the start. This is a much more robust machine than the iMac. That machine is for kids to play with. The MacPro IS A MANLY MACHINE. (says it in a deep voice with reverb).

Cool Victor, can’t wait to listen to the story on your podcast.

Ok so, yes I canceled the iMac (can’t afford both). As far as the Apple store. I was able to call in and say “What is the biggest configured Mac Pro you have” They told me a 2.66GHZ with 1 Gig of Ram (You know your basic Mac Pro).

I asked if they could add the memory (yes they could and they did).

I asked if they could add the Bluetooth and Airport card (yes they could and they did)

I asked if they could add a 500GB HD (no they could not and did not) I did buy a 500GB HD that night at COMP USA for 198 (out the door WOW) and installed it on the MAC PRO in (and I’m not kidding you) 7 minutes flat (I timed it).

So yes all great comments and I agree that it’s a good out come. Do I feel more MANLY By God, I think I do

Although I am amazed at how difficult it was for you to get the original computer you wanted I loved the ending to this saga! You certainly have made me jealous with your new Pro! Great pics, too.

  • Philip from Australia

    I still want one.

    But maybe an 8 way…

    Way to go, Victor.

At my Apple Store, we have several 3.0GHz models, and we also install graphic card upgrades and hard drives, so it’s quite possible they just didn’t have a 3.0GHz or the upgrades in stock for you.

    S. really good to know and thanks for sharing. I believe I have become a full time “real” Apple Store person. You guys Rock!

  • Alan

You dawg… that is a sweet setup, congrats!

I have an older PowerMac Dual G5 2.0 and am dying to upgrade, but this ol’ box still runs good. By the time my Applecare is up, hopefully they’ll have a “Sweet 16″ model, ha-ha!

I also have a 13″ MacBook for the road, but when it comes to the desktop, I love those “cheese graters”.

    Enjoy your new toy!

Yeah Alan I can sure shred with this big boy

  • Alan

Victor, I forgot to mention this…

All the G5s and newer Mac Pros use that cheese grater style case. If you closely look at each hole, no matter where on the machine, you’ll find each hole is a precise circle, even where the metal is bent. I once read about how much work has to be done to achieve this, which shows just how much thought goes into this case design.

It’s an awesome design alright. I took a picture of it and when I changed the aperture I could see behind the grill it was cool. Here is the pic I uploaded it http://farm1.static.flickr.com/164/431091834_dcb926c675_o.jpg
