Thanks for another great episode, Victor. And a special thanks to George I use VNC all the time to control my iMac G5 and my Linux PCs at home. Vine Server has worked great for me, even better than the built-in VNC component in Tiger since Vine Server allows me to access the Mac even when someone is not logged in (something that I couldn’t do with the built-in VNC component in Tiger unless the user was already logged in). Vine Server also handled resolution changes better than the built-in VNC component in Tiger. I also use Chicken of the VNC on the iMac and love it.
Also, if you wanted to control a Windows XP or Windows Vista computer remotely from your Mac, Microsoft has the Remote Desktop Client for Macintosh (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopclient). It’s not a UB, but it will still work decently on Intel Macs. For the command-line jockeys, there’s also the open source app called rdesktop (http://www.rdesktop.org) which can be downloaded and compiled or you can install it using Fink or DarwinPorts. Once you have that installed, you can also use this front-end for rdesktop called RDC from Baritchi Software (http://www.baritchisoftware.com/oss/mac/rdc). Both RDC and rdesktop require X11 to be installed, and RDC will only work in Tiger. The latter isn’t for everyone, but it’s a great open source solution.

I have to echo Quadsix50’s comments. An absolutely GREAT show Victor. If anyone hasn’t yet viewed Mark Pilgrim’s screencast, its a fantastic step-by-step on securely connecting to your MAC from a PC via a VNC client while tunneling through SSH.
As a LONGTIME PC guy and recent “slider”… (ok, it’s been over a year now)… I still work on and maintain both environments.
Thanks to George for, again lending a hand on the podcast. His input is always appreciated.

Hi Victor,
I was a little surprised you didn’t mention SpyMe for remote controlling macs but I guess time was short, ( http://www.readpixel.com/spyme ). It lets you fully control mac(s), with easy file transfer, screen resizing and a ton of other good stuff you won’t find in VNC but will on more high end products . You can actually use it for free if you can live with it timing out after 30 mins or just $15 for a 3 user licence. If you look on their home page to the right there’s a screeencast from Don McAllister showing off it’s features too, the best $15 I’ve ever spent!
Cheers

The logmein peope now have a mac client- https://secure.logmein.com/products/mac/
I’ve tested it and does work well with a PC controlling a mac, far smoother than VNC. It’s big plus here is thati it already uses SSL so you don’t need to use a VPN like Hamachi and mess about opening up firewall ports.
We’ve started a thread with screeshots over at the Screencastsonline forum- http://screencastsonline.com/forums/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1181148522/0#0
