Monitor Envy

Victor has had dual monitors setup since the day he got his Intel MacPro.  I also use that setup at work.  At home I have had to live with monitor envy as I have a 17″ iMac G5 2Ghz.  Today I was at the Apple Store and picked up the Apple mini VGA to VGA adapter for $19 USD.  Next I went back to an article I saw about monitor spanning on Macworld several months ago. It is working great for me.  If you do this you do so at your own risk.  Be very sure your system is on the supported list.  Even then you should back up your data etc etc etc.

    I have a PowerMac dual 2.7 G5 with the Apple 23″ monitor.
Costco had a 1080i 23″ HiDef televsion (by Sceptre) on sale for around $399 with a coupon.
I bought a six foot DVI to HDMI cable on eBay (about $10 including postage) and plugged it into the second port on the Mac’s video card.
Result is a secent dual monitor setup; the television doesn’t have nearly the same resolution as the Apple display, but it’s fine for parking an iTunes window or watching a Quicktime movie.
speaking of movies, for Final Cut users this also provides an inexpensive alternative to a studio monitor. Final Cut will play real-time previews on the television, and you can see what your masterpiece will look like on an actual television!
