Sharing an EVDO connection with an iPhone

So while on the road I like to use the internet on my mac and I have a SPRINT EVDO card that allows me to get on line just about any time.

My wife also brings her Power Book and often we use the OS X Internet Sharing option in order to share out my EVDO connection with my wife via an Airport connection.

Now that I have the iPhone, and the iPhone downloads data so much faster over Wi-Fi than the EDGE network, I wanted to find out if I could share my SPRINT EVDO network with my iPhone in the same way using OS X Internet Sharing. We in a word. . . YES.

It works like a charm and now I can roam around I am during my vacation and share my higher speed internet connection with my iPhone. Here is how I did it.

1. Go to System Preferences

2. Go to the Sharing icon.

3. Click on the Internet tab

4. Since you are going to be sharing your EVDO connection pic that from the “Share your connection from:” (drop-down)

5. Check on “Airport” in the box that is labeled “To computers using:”

6. Click on the “Airport Options” button

7. Name your Network using the “Network Name” blank box (Name it something you recognize)

8. Under the “Channel” drop-down leave it as automatic

9. Check the “Enable encryption (using WEP)

10. Enter a good complex password (you will be using this to connect to your network)

11. Under the “WEB Key Length” drop-down make sure it says 40-bit

12. Press OK

13. Press START and the confirm by pressing START again when the pop up comes up.

That’s it you can know share your internet connection with you iPhone. The iPhone wlll recognize the network, you enter your password and your iPhone will think it’s just on any other Wi-Fi network.

Remember to turn this feature off the moment you don’t need it. This is because you are broadcasting your internet connection just like any other Wi-Fi connection and even-though you do have password protection for it, we always need to practice good security measures in order to not get iPoned.

I’ll continue my travels now. Victor out.

  1. Nice idea. Just like we shared your EVDO connection at the Podcast Expo.

  2. Great tip! I don’t have an iPhone, yet, but was hoping to be able to share the iPhone’s connection with my mac. As a macbook user I don’t have an express card slot. So I was hoping that I could use the Bluetooth from the iPhone to get online with my macbook. From what I heard that isn’t possible.
