Tonight, Michelle (cntrysigns) and other listeners take over the show while I’m on vacation (again). Thanks to all who participated, Blake, Mike, John, and too many others to list (You know who you are and that I appreciate it).Pretty busy with vacation, so I’ll do show notes as I get time. Again all, awesome job. I have the best listeners anywhere. WOOT!

JohnB from Memphis has gone through 4 MacPros. Apple has been good about fixing it. Blake came on and gave John some great ideas to try. JohnB uses imovie HD and Blake suggested he try Final Cut instead.
My macbook has had the Random Shutdown and I hard drive died but Apple has been great with service.

  1. Great work, Michelle. Loved the exchange of ideas and other information.

As for emulation on games, I have to agree that emulation for Windows games just is not good enough. Games like that should be made native on the Mac in my opinion. However, for a lot of the older arcade games like Space Invaders, Pong, and various other arcade games like this, I prefer to use MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), specifically MacMAME on my iMac G5. While these do require the actual arcade ROMs, you can purchase them from some sites or if you’re daring enough you can find them online. Mind you, some of the ROMs are still covered under proprietary licenses by their manufacturers so I can’t say exactly where you can find them, but if you search around through Google you can come up with some hits.

Thanks to MacMAME, I can relive the days of my childhood when I used to visit the local pizza store to spend all my quarters on video games. And now I can do that at home with my boys on my Mac. :D

  2. About the iMovie failure.

If you’re making a 6 gig movie you may also be stressing the file size that iMovie was intended to handle. I’m no editing expert but I do know that the more ‘pro’ apps are designed to take the fullest use of the computer they are using. Yes, there are much more expensive, but they may be better able to handle the size of project you’re throwing at it. Otherwise you may be having to split up the project into smaller pieces.

If you were to render out finished parts and then add them back in as clips that might also help. Or even cleaning up the clips, there should be a menu command for that. That will delete all the video bits you’re not using and that will reduce the size of your projects.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Holy CRAP!!!! Why did you do another show seemongly unprepared. Nothing personal you understand, but you knew you were gonna be hosting a show. Why did you do a show about nothing????

    Comment by jimilee — July 12, 2007 @ 6:18 am

  4. Jimilee, I wanted to comment on your comment. I feel very lucky to be able to once in a while turn the show over to the listeners to do a show when I’m on vacation. The listeners are not regular podcasters, and therefore the show may not be up to your listening standards and that is understandable. It’s my responsibility to let the show do what it will and to give it to the listeners when I’m away.

If you did not enjoy the content, then I’m sorry, and I will be back in full swing later this weekend. I do appreciate your honesty and hope you continue to listen and participate. Perhaps next time you can be part of the panel.

  5. Just my opinion, and I’m just one guy,I just thought she could have been better prepared. No offense intended to anybody, don’t want to come off wrong.

  6. No offense, jimilee, but your criticism could have been a little more constructive. Maybe offering some pointers on topics for future shows when Victor is out of town. But just spewing out “Holy CRAP” and sounding a bit accusatory isn’t going to help Michelle. In fact, it might turn some people off because of responses like this. This is a community that’s here to assist others new to the Mac. Some people are new to podcasting as well, and therefore might need some constructive criticism to get them going in the right direction.

If you feel that you could do better, then by all means let Victor know as I’m sure he could use all the help he can during his times away from the podcast.

No on calls a child unprepared or shouts expletives at them when they can’t ride a bike on the first few tries. Why should it be any different for someone that’s new to a particular technology or medium?

    Just my 2 cents…

  7. I left Jimilee’s comment on the blog because I like healthy non flaming discussion to go on at all times. I felt he was being honest about his feeling and that is a good thing. My attempt with the blog and web-site at all times is to build community, skills and talents .

Michelle and many people who listen to the show have a desire to learn things, and this is something that I really encourage. We can’t all start with all the skills we need to sound like we have been podcasting forever. I give my show to all of you on Sundays as we participate together and on occasions like my vacation with pleasure, because I know that WE are a community of people who are like minded.

So… I appreciate that Jimilee was open enough to express opinions (that is always good),even though the “Holy Crap” opening could have been better worded in my opinion. On the other hand as I stated I am one who believes that there is no substitute for growth and experience that we can only get by doing. Constructive criticism is always a good thing.

I will continue to encourage all of you to send me audio segments for the show, to participate in the show as without all of us there will be no show. Yes it’s my show and yes I am the primary contributor, however it is also your show (the collective) so conversations like this are encouraged as long as they do not turn into flame wars. If they do, then I will remove them and let the parties know, otherwise, lets keep healthy discussions going always.

Keep contributing folks, and let’s not be too harsh on Michelle, Jimilee or anyone else who wants to contribute in a positive manner.

    Thanks
    Victor

  8. Well said Victor.
I was part of the chat and I thought Michelle did great. From the looks of the show notes, there was plenty that we talked about. I imagine it is very hard to chat, talk on a phone, read the chats and stay on track.

Can’t wait for the next one. Great Job!
    Jim
