Amazon.com casts an evil spell to keep me at home on a Saturday

So my wife, son and I have been very anxiously looking forward to getting the new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows book. I ordered my books (3 of them) on June 25th wanting to make sure my whole family had the book on day one.

On July 10th Amazon sent me an email stating that:

“we are going to make sure you receive your copy(s) on the day of release, July 21, 2007, guaranteed, at no additional charge to you!”.

However after not getting my book today and realizing that UPS (their normal carrier) is closed on weekends, I went back and re-read the e-mail. It has a link buried in that email to this web-page , which states:

“Although a signature is not required, we cannot guarantee whether our carrier will leave a package at the delivery address if no one is available to accept it. (Important: See restrictions below.) Therefore, we recommend that someone be available to accept the delivery on Saturday. If the package is not delivered on July 21, your mail carrier should leave a note for you explaining your options for re-delivery or picking up the package at your local Post Office. “

Apparently Amazon used the Confundus Charm in order to to make their customer believe what they wanted them to. Crucio Amazon, crucio is all I can say. You have also evoked the Immobulus spell to keep me home all day until 7PM so I can enjoy a purchase which should have been pleasant.

Perhaps an Incendio charm on my part to my Amazon account will take care of the problem. I do have all day to practice it. Yeah I know, partly my fault for not reading the details. But I’m still getting my wand out.

Update: Finally after a long wait the books got here at 5:26 pm (PST). Thanks for all the great comments and letting me vent a bit . I suppose a Finite Incantatem is in order at this point.

FileChute is my “Pick of the Day”

Today we switch gears into an application that for $14.95 US Give you a whole lot of bang for your buck.

I’m talking about FileChute by YellowMug Software

I use this application on a weekly basis. Anytime that I need to quickly send a “bigger” file to someone and I don’t have much time. FileChute makes sending these files easy. All I have to do is just drag a file and drop it into FilleChute. FileChute then puts the file on my .mac account, I copy the link to my e-mail program and send it to the recipient. If you don’t have a .mac account don’t worry, FileChute also works with most FTP clients so you can use your own server. It’s quick and easy, and that make FileChute the “Pick of the Day”

OpenID, use iChat and you already have one.

by: George Starcher, Associate Editor

Back in February, AOL gave openID support to every person with a logon. That also means iChat users. Even your mac.com logon. I had some problems with a few sites testing the name@mac.com format. BUT it did work on others. So your milage may vary. When it works though you only have to remember your AOL-IM logon and password for any site that accepts openID.

Your openID URL is http://openid.aol.com/screenname where screenname is your regular aol IM nick name even if it is name@mac.com

If you want to watch more on openID you can check out Don McAllister’s recent screecast on openID. Show SCO0107

Miro is my pick of the day

I’m trying to blog one “Pick of the Day” for me on the blog that our TMUP community can benefit from. Can’t promise I’ll be able to keep it up, but I’ll try.

Today the Pick is Miro. This is the latest incarnation of the Democracy Player project. It’s a very powerful and free video player, that plays You Tube, video podcasts, knows how to deal with free Internet TV, torrents and much more. As the Miro blog states. . .

We have a new name (Miro) and a new logo designed by Jon Hicks (who did the Firefox logo). Our new website has been updated throughout with better, more focused, and more up to date info. Our forums are totally new and way better. The channel guide has move to miroguide.com and has a whole new look (it’s still designed to be used primarily inside the app).  And most importantly, this version of Miro is much improved.

Want to try something different? Try The Jing Project

Ok so when I was a PC user I was a huge fan of Camtasia and SnagIt by TechSmith. I have been waiting for them to dip their toe in the Mac waters and now they have with the Jing Project. It’s a Screenshot, Screencast, and publishing application, however it does have a new twist, that might soon have us all saying “Jing Me.”

Take a look at the Jing Project or visit the Jing Blog

jingproject.jpg

TechSmith describes the project as follows. . .

The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere.

It’s something we want to give you, along with some online media hosting, to see how you use it. The project will eventually turn into something else. Tell us what you think so we can figure out what that is.

I tried the installation and basic functionality and was impressed at first glance. Sure there are lots of tools that do Screenshots, Screencasts , etc, however I very much respected Techsmith as a PC user and I’m just glad to see them in the game. Give it a try and let them know what you think. Let me know too but adding notes to this blog entry. This has not been written about much on the Web yet, so get in early.

iPhone says. . .more than 2 Billion e-mails messages unread. Ouch!

I looked at my iPhone and saw that it showed I had more than 2 Billion (2,147,483,633) e-mails that were waiting to be read. Don’t know what kind of glitch this is on my iPhone, but wow, I’m not going on vacation any time soon if this happens <wink>.

This happened while I was in Colorado riding down a train after being more than 14,000 feet up. Who knows what it was, but it was funny.
