Hello Victor. I wasn’t in the chat too long. Ironic that a lot of the discussion was about HD and backup.

Very strange that after I left the chat, I worked a bit on graphics and product images for my CafePress shop. Then all of a sudden my Mac G5 PPC starts acting very slow. After every thing I did I got the beach ball and it would take a considerable amount of time before it caught up. I force shut down a couple times. Then I zapped PRAM (no change). Keep in mind that I have not had any problems like this with my G5. I DID replace the SuperDrive early on. I bought a second internal from Apple. Thank God I recently purchased a couple external Hard Drives for backup.

I rebooted holding down the ALT key. I chose my backup hard drive to boot up. Then I tried using disk utilities to repair the main disk. It failed 3 times per Disk Utility. I am currently running Tech Tool Deluxe. It has found 4 errors so far. Here is a link to the Disk Utility Log: http://www.jimfelder.com/disk-utility-log.txt

So now, I assume I need a new hard drive. I have 2 LaCie externals. 1 is Firewire and 1 is USB. I have a second internal Maxtor HD. I use my second internal to store work, iPhoto Lib, iTunes Lib and movies, etc. The two externals are just backups.

I am currenlty running on my backup ext. HD. Any suggestions or help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Well I’d try to repair the HD using tech tools or even disk utility. Better to fix the drive than have to replace it. If you ca get the internal repaired and even re-formated, then you can restore it using the external back up. Sorry to hear you had such problems. We will see if we have anyone else with suggestions.

Hi Victor, on this show, somebody talked about an external hardisk that was not usable since the last upgrade 10.4.10, may I suggest that she buy a compatible external enclosure known to work, like the Vantec and Nexstar and just transfer or ask a technician to transfer the old disk from the bad external drive into the new enclosure. This would be less expensive than buying a new external drive. And when the patch is out for the non working enclosure, she could buy or reused an old disk in it.

    Hello Victor,

Unfortunately I had to leave before getting my question in so hopefully you can help. Currently I have a Mac Book Pro with a 160GB hard drive. I am running Super Duper and backup my entire drive to an external FW 800 OWC mercury elite drive.

My question is this. I’m starting to run low on disk space on my laptop and want to ‘offload’ some files to free up space. These files would mostly be pictures or music since this is the bulk of what is on my Mac. What options do I have to offload these files while at the same time ensuring that wherever they are kept they also get backed up. Can daisy chain another external drive to my current one and have super duper back up from ext to ext?

Don Q, yes if you have more than one external drive connected you can have Super Duper back up one external drive to another. If they are firewire you can daisy chain them but that’s not a requirement.

Just plug in the second drive, and then open Super Duper, use the drive you want to back up as the source and the second external as the destination and that’s it. I’m sure others will chime in on these comments and suggest other ways as well.

    Thanks Victor

In response to Bookaroo,i was the one with the hard drive that didn’t work after 10.4.10. Actually that was one of my troubleshooting steps was to transfer it to another enclosure that I had lying around and yes it worked which is how Apple and I narrowed down the issue. But I still was kinda looking for a reason to buy a new and bigger drive. :) Thanks for the great troubleshooting tip though, that’s one we didn’t mention on the podcast.
