First Video with Canon HV20 and iMovie

Well as most of you know I finally got my Canon HV 20 High Definition Video Camera, and now I just have to learn all about this video business. Well here is my first attempt at recording something with my new Camcorder.

I did this late afternoon and I edited it with both iMovie 08 and Garage Band (for the music background) . I also played with Final Cut Studio, but that was way beyond my abilities for right now.

George Starcher and I were on a video iChatAV and we both observed what one potential work flow might be for me using iMovie 08 and Garage Band to put videos in the .Mac web Gallery as well as YouTube. I will report on that in a future show as there is much to learn and experiment with. I commented to George that I feel that iMovie 08 is going to be the “gateway software” for me to get the concepts, ideas and creativity to really learn video editing and producing. Well that’s a wonderful way to use this product, despite some of the negative reviews it has been getting.

I don’t agree with the reviews in that it is a very powerful tool and I think we just all need to learn how to exploit it. I do agree that the audio production capabilities within iMovie 08 are very poor, however once you add Garage Band to the work flow, you can get what you want, if you are willing to jump through a couple of hoops to get it back into iMovie 08 to publish. This workflow should improve as Apple gets feedback in later versions of iMovie 08 .

Enjoy the first video , and look for a video of my un-boxing and setting up of my Drobo very early next week.

Very nice. Of course, we need to get you a tripod now! Always more money to be spent. (SMILE)

It looks a very nice camera, really crisp and good picture. I’m sure you will love playing with it.

Have a regular Tri-pod Douglas, need to keep it in the car with me. Also I’m working on the Drobo setup video. We will see how that comes out. I love learning.

Congrats Victor! glad you took the plunge – movies look great. Tell me more about your external mic setup.

Good luck with the new toy, Victor. I’m waiting/hoping for my Panasonic PV-GVS250 to break down, but the darn thing keeps taking nice SD video. Recently started using anamorphic to get some beautiful 16:9 — you can’t tell the difference from HD if you distribute it on a standard DVD!

I noticed some blockiness/artifacts when there was a lot of motion in the video. Bet that was caused by the compression for Internet. Would be interested in seeing parts of the same video but with a larger file size.

Victor, I’m looking at buying the HV20 and in my searching online I found a helpful page at Apple. It refers to a HV20/FCP workflow. Of course, this article doesn’t fall under the “typical user” profile. None the less, it might be helpful to you, if you own FCP or get it in the future.

    Nice video!

I just got my new HV20, but I am unable to get iMovie 08 or iMovie HD to recognize the cameral on the firewire! What was your setup sequence? Did you use a firewire purchased from Canon? What am I doing wrong?

Here is a link. I did nothing special at all. Made sure I had a standard Firewire cable , plugged in to the mac, then I turned on iMovie. Goodl luck
