No Walmart Music for you Mac

Even if I wanted to use the new DRM free music download service being offered by Walmart, I can’t. If you are a Mac user, you are out of luck my friend.

Narrow-minded, non – forward thinking. Those are the words that come to mind. I’ll just continue to use the iTunes Music Store for now , or look for other options.

Music my Way! I don’t think so.

Pick of the Day: LazyMouse

WARNING!!! Update: Some users are reporting problems with loading this application. I had not issues with three machines. So please read the comments on this blog post before installing. Oviously it could just be coincidence, but I trust you guys and wanted to give fair warining. I bought the application and it worked well for me. I’ve contacted the developer about the issues as an FYI. Maybe he will comment as well.

One of the best features about my SteerMouse USB driver for my MacBook is this ability to automatically (as if by magic) send the cursor over to jut the right spot within a dialog box when I’m doing something. I cannot tell you what a time saver this has been for me. But what if you don’t need a USB driver , but want this functionality?

Today I found LazyMouse . It is a Preference Pane that moves your cursor to the default button whenever a dialog box appears on your screen.

Give it a try for free, or buy it for only $9.95 or $24.95 for a five user family license. You simply will not know what you have been missing until you try out the ability to have your mouse do some of the thinking for you.

Where do I apply?

This image jumped out at me while I was scanning the ABC News website. The story actually had nothing do “Mac” as we know it but it did make me laugh.

Sleepless in Macbook Land

Listener Shannon wrote to me to describe a Macbook that just would not go to sleep no matter what. He had heard and tried the tip on this show as well as called AppleCare several times. He had gotten no satisfaction.

To say Shannon was persistent would be an understatement. He looked up what she could, got AppleCare involved more than three times. He wrote to me and read articles and suggestions I gave him. To no avail, the stubborn MacBook seemed to have a bad case of Insomnia not cause by Espresso.

Finally he tried AppleCare one more time. Unfortunately he found they had no record of what they had tried already. However this time his persistence paid off. He writes about the resolution below.

The culprit: A networked hard drive.

I have an Airport Extreme router. One of the big reasons I went with
the Airport Extreme was the ability to plug in a USB hard drive (WD
MyBook 500GB) and make it a network drive. That process works great.
On my MBP, I set up the Airport Disk Utility to automatically discover
the hard drive. Ivan (the tech) found that it was the network hard drive that caused the computer
not to go to sleep. Long and short, AppleCare seemed to fix my issues today.

I can still access my network drive, albeit a little more manually.
That’s fine by me, if it will help my computer shut itself down,
saving electricity and probably increasing the longevity of the MBP.

So if you also have a not so sleepy MacBook and you have a network drive connected to it, try it it may be better than a sleeping pill for your Mac. Thanks Shannon for helping us all learn

Running Ubuntu on my Mac using VMWare

I asked my friend Kreg Steppe today if I could download Ubuntu and install it on my VMWare Fusion. He sent me a link to an already configured Virtual Applicance, specifically Ubuntu 7.04

Now, before loading this virtual appliance using VMWare Fusion, I could only spell Ubuntu. The download and install took 10 minutes. I started VMWare Fusion, chose Ubuntu instead of my Windows XP virtual machine, and the installation started. Five minutes later I was at a log-in screen. The user name did not work so I got a hold Kreg who told me the default user name and password.

I then logged in and that was it. I was running a new operating system while still running OS X, and had a new toy to learn about. A completely configured Linux machine that I could learn about and play with. It had Firefox, Open Office and many other games, accessories built in. VMWare Fusion made this very very easy.

So if you have VMWare Fusion, try out some virtual machines. Exploration is such a neat part of being a MacGeek. Ubuntu, Ubuntu , Ubuntu. Boy I like saying that, and typing it.

iMovie – no video render issue

by: George Starcher, Associate Editor

I was trying to make a nice little video of a dotMac group page for my mostly pc based friends. I want to move a list we use from Yahoo to the group page I made. No matter what I did I got black video when I shared the video from iMovie 08. Titles worked, audio was there but the video was black. So I finally discovered the answer after browsing through the Apple iMovie forums.

iMovie 08 is having issues rendering video clips where the clips were recorded using the animation codec. I had used this codec when I recorded my screen using ishowu. What I found on the Apple forum was not helpful in fixing the issue but it sure confirmed it. Perhaps whatever Apple has done on the exporting from iMovie explains why you cannot export to the Elgato Turbo H.264 encoder stick.

*Update* Found a Cheat

I found that I could cheat. I dumped my screen video file into the Elgato at AppleTV settings. Then I took the file it spit out and dropped that into iMovie08. Worked like a champ because at that point it is no longer the Animation codec. I was then able to upload my movie clip to my dotMac gallery just fine.
