Listener Shannon wrote to me to describe a Macbook that just would not go to sleep no matter what. He had heard and tried the tip on this show as well as called AppleCare several times. He had gotten no satisfaction.
To say Shannon was persistent would be an understatement. He looked up what she could, got AppleCare involved more than three times. He wrote to me and read articles and suggestions I gave him. To no avail, the stubborn MacBook seemed to have a bad case of Insomnia not cause by Espresso.
Finally he tried AppleCare one more time. Unfortunately he found they had no record of what they had tried already. However this time his persistence paid off. He writes about the resolution below.
The culprit: A networked hard drive.
I have an Airport Extreme router. One of the big reasons I went with
the Airport Extreme was the ability to plug in a USB hard drive (WD
MyBook 500GB) and make it a network drive. That process works great.
On my MBP, I set up the Airport Disk Utility to automatically discover
the hard drive. Ivan (the tech) found that it was the network hard drive that caused the computer
not to go to sleep. Long and short, AppleCare seemed to fix my issues today.
I can still access my network drive, albeit a little more manually.
That’s fine by me, if it will help my computer shut itself down,
saving electricity and probably increasing the longevity of the MBP.
So if you also have a not so sleepy MacBook and you have a network drive connected to it, try it it may be better than a sleeping pill for your Mac. Thanks Shannon for helping us all learn
