TMUPS:004 Making and optimizing ringtones on iPhone

Filed under: TMUP Screencasts — Victor Cajiao @ 7:32 pm

UPDATE 12/14/07: Apple has now made all of this very easy in Garage Band. Here is how.

Today I cover how to use Garage Band to make and optimize ringtones for the iPhone.
I am publishing the highest quality and resolution file on the feed and here for the blog. This is on purpose, because I feel that I need to present the highest quality product that I can. It is optimized for Apple TV and streaming. This file will not work on your iPod or iPhone

If you want the iPod or iPhone files you can go here to this page. These files are meant to be downloaded and played on your iPod or iPhone.

Side note: I originally posted this show on Amazon S3 network but soon (very soon) found the bill was getting too high. With about 33% of my audience downloading the show I was almost at $20 US for one show. So I have moved the main file and upgraded my Libsyn account. It was a good experiment however

Thanks for the great information Victor. I really appreciate all the effort you put in!

Having these on the same feed works out great for me.

I look forward to your review of the Drobo!

Fantastic screencast, Victor. I do not own an iPhone or need to make ringtones, but I wanted to learn about Garageband. Great stuff in there even for me.

I would never complain about too much help from you, Victor! Goodness, I am amazed at your output — both quantity and quality. You are giving Mr. McAlister’s screencastsonline.com some competition! (I learned about him from you, by the way, and, of course, love his site too!!)

    Keep them coming! Thank you!

  • Simon

Victor keep them coming, these are GREAT!!

This makes me want to open up Garage Band and have a play, until now I have never used it as Audio was never my thing but you make it look easy :-)

    More please ;-)

    Excellent.

  • Jay Friedman

Wow! As good or better than Don McAllister’s.

Victor this was great to learn. I don’t own an iPhone but I used the settings in Garageband for creating ringtones for my A900 Sprint Phone. I have to use a site to upload the file then they send it to my phone for Free. Then I just tell the phone to download it. It really made a huge difference in how the music sounds. I have done this before straight from iTunes. When the phone rang, the music would be very choppy because I am guessing that the music file/ringer was too high of quality to play it smoothly.

This was great to watch and it really helped even a Non-iPhone user. I love your VideoCasts Victor. Thanks for giving us the time and providing us with such great content.

Wow every one thanks for the great comments on this screencast. Jim that is cool that this can be used for any ringtones (duh of course). Also Jay thanks for the complement, being even compared to Don is a great compliment and if you aren’t subscribed to what he does you don’t know what you are missing. Of course I’m going for the highest quality I can because I believe in good quality. Like I said , I consider it an honor just to be mentioned in the same sentence as Don as he is an inspiration to me.

Great tutorial Victor – I really enjoyed that. Would you mind making the files you used available for download – including the final ringtone?

    Keep up the great work

    Cheers,

    Klaus

unfortunately Klaus I can’t make the file available to everyone because I co-wrote it with someone.

A reason I listen/watch Victor: he just isn’t all talk; he dives into the applications and creates these little gems.

Diving, drowning, yup, that is one thing I do. It’s my Typical Mac User Life, I’m just sharing it with a ton of my friends on the web. Dorothy “gets it.”
