Written by contributing editor Stu Helm from BUMP – British Users of Mac Podcast

Well it’s been an exciting day here in the UK, specifically in the Regent Sreet, London Apple Store. Steve Jobs (Apple’s CEO – do I really need to say that?) and Matthew Key (O2-UK’s CEO) were both present at the media event (the store itself was closed to the general public) to finally announcement the release plans for the iPhone in the UK. You won’t want to miss this cornucopia of applications (did I just use the word cornucopia?)

Hi everyone, I’m Stu from Leeds here in the UK and I’m a fairly new Typical Mac User myself, having switched in October 2006 to a 20″ iMac Core 2 Duo and most recently a brand new MacBook Pro. I thought you may find it interesting to know what’s happening in terms of Apple growth and the deal we get from Apple themselves. (more…)

TMUPS:004 Making and optimizing ringtones on iPhone

Filed under: TMUP Screencasts — Victor Cajiao @ 7:32 pm

UPDATE 12/14/07: Apple has now made all of this very easy in Garage Band. Here is how.

Today I cover how to use Garage Band to make and optimize ringtones for the iPhone.
I am publishing the highest quality and resolution file on the feed and here for the blog. This is on purpose, because I feel that I need to present the highest quality product that I can. It is optimized for Apple TV and streaming. This file will not work on your iPod or iPhone

If you want the iPod or iPhone files you can go here to this page. These files are meant to be downloaded and played on your iPod or iPhone.
(watch on your browser)

For iPod or iPhone files you can go here

Side note: I originally posted this show on Amazon S3 network but soon (very soon) found the bill was getting too high. With about 33% of my audience downloading the show I was almost at $20 US for one show. So I have moved the main file and upgraded my Libsyn account. It was a good experiment however

iPod Touch is a “Hot” Device

More and more reports are coming in about the iPod Touch shipping and they say that this is a HOT device…no really.

Exclusive: Full Gallery of iPod Touch in Factory Test Mode, Shows No Bluetooth On Board – Gizmodo

David Olivo wrote to tell us that he got his new hot iPod touch 16GB yesterday. And when he says hot, he means hot: “when I went to open the box, I found that it is actually HOT. I opened it, and found a weird screen menu staring at me. My iPod was on, on its own!” It was in factory test mode. This screen displays a hardware subsystems check, showing an “X” on Bluetooth.

Pick of the Day: Cyberduck 2.8

Ever wanted to use FTP or SSH to get to your Mac while you are on the road. Try Cyberduck

Cyberduck is an open source FTP and SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) browser licenced under the GPL with an easy to use interface, integration with external editors and support for many Mac OS X system technologies such as Spotlight, Bonjour, the Keychain and AppleScript.

This is an easy to use solution, and recently with the help of George Starcher I’ve been using it instead of iGet because it works, and because it’s donation ware. If you like it please donate. Version 2.8 was just released.

iPod Touch Shipping Already?

It wasn’t supposed to ship until September 28th, but signs point to it starting to show up early in Apple Stores. Evidence my Flickr unboxing and A Video on (where else) YouTube. [Found via iLounge]

iPhone Ringtone

by: Matt Beckwith, Associate Editor

Even though the ringer on my iPhone is generally never even turned on, I decided to buy a ringtone from iTunes, just in the interest of sharing my experience. After installing the latest version of iTunes (7.4.1) I went to my ‘Purchased’ playlist, right clicked on the column-header, selected ‘Ringtone’ and clicked ‘Check Songs’ button at the next prompt.

I clicked the Ringtone icon to sort the songs that had the option, and selected which one I was going to use. (more…)

Review of the Newertech MiniStack NAS

By George Starcher Associate Editor

A TMU Listener asked we review the Newertech miniStack NAS. Ironically that unit was reviewed by Gizmodo today.
Gizmodo did not appear to understand how the technology driving the miniStack works. That said they have valid issues with the unit from a typical user point of view.

To sum it up before we get into the details. It is mislabeled as a NAS. It should be called a mini SAN device. NAS means Network Attached Storage. SAN means Storage Area Network. There is a difference. Maybe not much of one to a typical mac user. But there is a fundamental difference regardless. It also explains why the unit specific driver is needed and why only one user at a time is allowed to write to the device. (more…)
