TMUPS:006 Partitioning a new Hard Drive
In this short Screencast I show you how to partition a brand new hard drive.
I’m having a whole discussion in my head (and with a few of you), about having my content in a separate feed. Given the time it takes to do all of this, I don’t have time to give you this content and create separate feeds etc. However I am putting the main content of these shows on Blip.tv and they have a feed for my show. If you want to subscribe to the Typical Mac User Blip.tv Video feed you can do so here
I really need you guys to have some patience with me if you want any video content. I always believe that honesty is the best policy. So for now, keep looking in your iTunes feed for videos and also look in the new Typical Mac User Blip.tv Video feed. That way you won’t miss any content I put out. Also provide feedback on the content that I am giving. I’m having a blast learning how to use this technology and using it to share stuff with you guys. Thank you all for continuing to be subscribed and for listening and watching my show.
For iPod or iPhone files you can go here

Don McAllister better watch out looks like you might have a new profession Victor, nice and simple I like it, ere by the way perhaps the next screencast should be how to rename a partition, I’m sure you’ve already done that he he.

Mr C,
Another fantastic screencast, easy to follow and understand.
I think the utilities folder is neglected by all but the most geeky of us and its great to see you put some fire back into these great Apps, like I have always said, Macs will do most if not all the things you need out of the box.
More please
And thank you.
Simon

Victor,
I don’t think you have enough hard drives.

Excellent screencast. However, isn’t Timemachine needing twice the disk space of your boot volume?
Comment by Rene — October 13, 2007 @ 12:13 pm
Wow really then I’m going to have to rethink that partition strategy. I did not know it was going to need twice the size of your disks volume. that seems like a lot. If you can let me know where you found this information I’ll thank you so much.

Victor- great screencast. However, a, uh… “little bird” told me that Time Machine is going to require it’s own separate hard drive, and will not work off a partition of another drive. Makes sense when you think about it because the time machine partition will likely be in the new ZFS format.
I too recently bought a 500GB drive that I planned on partitioning between Time Machine and other media, but looks like I’ll be buying yet another hard drive now. Unless you want to loan me one, looks like you have plenty!

Well looks like I re partition this baby then (or at least when Leopard comes out) . I’ll simply move the data from one of my several external drive to an internal and use it for Time machine. Interesting news indeed . I guess if our friends at Cupertino would release a bit more official information , then I would not have to guess about my purchases. I know , I know I could have waited. However at $150 foro 750Gb it still worth it.

Victor, I wrote you an e-mail message about Time Machine. In essence, I couldn’t find an article online that stated that you would need twice the disk space of your boot volume. So, please, disregard that remark.
Apple Insider has written a good article about Time Machine, which is interesting to read.

Good one! I am a switcher and I did not know how to partition hard drives. Very easy to follow! It worked perfect for me.

Ah, I now have a reference for people needing at least twice the space for a Time Machine drive compared to the drive space you already have. Adam Christianson said so in the Maccast number 204 of October 24, 2007.

It seems Victor indeed has to reconsider his backup strategy and buy a really, really big hard disk for all his connected hard disks in his Mac Pro.

Rene thanks for the update. I will NOT be choosing to use Time machine for my connected drives that would take too much room. I am still not 100% satisfied that a 2:1 ratio for the HD is appropriate and don’t necessarily agree with Adam on this. He stated that you need at least a 1:1 ratio and I do agree with that.
I think a 2:1 ratio could be overkill but I agree that HD space is cheap so why not do it if you want. For me I did re-partition my Time Machine partition to equal a 1:1.5 ratio. Thanks for the great comments
