From the UK : Leopard vs. iPhone

Well hello there folks, are you all excited about ‘L day’ on the 26th? I sure am, but I pose a question, only really relevant to us folks in Europe who have Leopard in the limelight for all of 17 days before we get hit with the iPhone launch, well the UK and Germany that is – France still look like they’ll be iPhoneless (does that even work as a word). My question is simple ‘Which will win’

Leopard is unleashed on the world on the last Friday of October, which from my understanding of Apple’s OS release policy is fairly typical, releasing the OS on a Friday that is, not the specific date. This is fantastic and I am pre-ordering my copy by the end of this week as I really don’t want to have get a train to the nearest Apple store in Sheffield to fight the rush.

Then, on November 9th, the iPhone hits the shores of good old Blighty (that’s England to everyone else) This is equally fantastic, but I won’t be rushing out to get one on the first day, as I’ve mentioned before I still need to sort out my contract with o2 to make sure I can just buy the phone, and then there’s the whole £270 price tag, which is fair enough but still expensive!

So, which will win the hearts of UK and European Mac lovers, the almighty new OS or the most anticipated phone to hit the stores for quite some time (and no before anyone asks, I will not be attempting any hacks on my baby when I eventually get it) For me this is a tough one.

I suppose my feeling is that Leopard will sit there to do a job, of course the first few days or weeks will be all about trying out new features (I’d suggest you all stay away from me on iChat – you know what I’ll be wanting to do) But at the same time, the iPhone will be something I use daily and will be ‘enjoying’ for a long time, not having to remember to pick up my iPod before heading for work will be worth every penny of the lofty price tag.

So Leopard vs iPhone, which will win? Any thoughts, send those comments in!

The iPhone will “under-perform” in terms of sales and this will be down to the price tag, we are cultured into “free” phones with our contracts and asking customers to pony-up £270 and 18 month contracts will not sit well in our British stomachs. Im a die hard 37 year old Apple evangelist with money to spend and If I wont buy then I cant see “Consumers” buying either.

Leopard I will buy next Friday and i will be at the Meadowhall Store but Im not over excited and have yet to see a feature that I could say “WoW” thats worth the £85.

So my prediction is this, Leopard will do well but may take some weeks to catch the eye of newbies “MacBook Brigade”.

The iPhone will fall on its behind until Apple dramatically reduce the price and even then they still have to break the cultural trend of free.

ON the back of Simon’s great comment, and an update to the story.

Good news is existing o2 customers won’t have to take out new contracts, as long as you joined o2 before the 17th September 2007, and so all you pay is the price for the iPhone.

I agree with Simon, it is an expensive phone, in UK terms, but combined with the iPod features (and a nice feature in Elgato’s eyeTV for wifi streaming of recorded shows to an iPhone) I think it’s worth it

Oh and looks like France will get the iPhone on November 29th, well at least they won’t get the Rugby World Cup!
