Tonight’s we attempt to put together the beginnings of a new virtual Mac Users Group. This is the somewhat edited version as I did not want to reveal personal information that was talked about. See the show notes for more details. Thanks to all who participated.

  1. Rene Says:

I don’t think a Mac Users Group is a good idea.

Why? Well, computer user groups were founded in the late 20th century, because it was hard to get information on computers. In user groups people could share information.

And guess what? Nowadays, it is not that hard to get information on computers (with the Net it’s easy). Furthermore, people generally don’t like to commit to a long term social gathering, because they have a busy life.

So, organizing social events people can go to is fine, but requiring people to join in order to participate is, in my humble opinion, an old way of thinking. Mac users already stand out of the crowd; we don’t need an additional layer to let people stand out even more.

OTOH, user groups for social change are still useful, because our governments are still too powerful for the individual to put a dent into the establishment. And similarly, user groups for consumer rights are useful as well, because it’s hard for the individual to go against a company’s policy.

Victor what a great idea and want to offer my services to the group.

Drop me a line with anything I can do to help ;-)

  3. Administrator Says:

Great Simon head over to Google Groups and look for mymug to get on the mailing list. This will NOT be related to the show, I’m a member only too. This was just a seed to plant and a good place to do it.

  4. Alex Says:

will this be a free thing to join? or will you have to pay for this?

  5. Administrator Says:

Everyone please go here http://groups.google.com/group/mymug/web/getting-started for more information.

The show was just a seed to get it started. Alex, I’m sure there will be dues. In most MUG’s there are.
