iPod Touch & iPhone – Remote Buddy Web Clip Icon
by: George Starcher, Associate Editor
I have been having fun with the updated iPod touch firmware. Tonight I decided I wanted to customize the webclip icon for Remote Buddy coming from my iMac. If you have Remote Buddy you probably bookmarked the Ajax interface so you can use it on your home network with relative ease. With v1.3 you can make a button on the touch screen desktop. But what if you want a nice icon instead of the ajax screenshot the iPod makes on its own?If you try this, make a backup copy of your remote buddy application first just in case.
- First I went to IOSpirit’s Web site for Remote Buddy.
- Next I grabbed that nice little graphic from the title banner top left of the remotes in the hat. Press command-shift-4 to get the screenshot crosshairs. I highlighted just icon itself and saved it to the desktop.
- Next I opened the image with Pixelmator that I got in the great current Macheist deal.
- Click on Image on the menu and select Image Size. Resize the image to 57×57. You may have to uncheck the box “Constrain Proportions” box so you can make it a full 57×57.
- Save the file as PNG format with the filename apple-touch-icon.png
Now the tricky part. How to get it so Remote Buddy can serve up the icon.
- I browsed to the Remote Buddy file in my Applications folder.
- Control-Click (aka right click)
- Choose “Show Package Contents”
- Click into the following directory: Contents->Resources->WebRemote
- Drag your apple-touch-icon.png file into that folder and close the window.
- Restart Remote Buddy, Pull up the Ajax page in your iPod Touch/iPhone web browser and add it to the desktop.
You should see your nice new Remote Buddy webclip icon.
*** UPDATE***Well they released a small update for Remote Buddy. It includes their own webclip icon for the Ajax web interface. I just wish they included HTTPS encryption.
