Macworld 2008 Videos: Data Robotics Drobo Share

This video introduces you to Data Robotics’ newest product, the Drobo Share.

A few of you got a Belkin Tune FM video file downloaded instead of the DROBO file. I reposted it so it should be fine now. If you got the Belkin file you can download the DROBO one here. Apologies.

iCal – Alarms Last Used Open Files

by: George Starcher, Associate Editor

During my experiments and working out the emailing my schedule to my wife I noticed previous ical automator plugins showed.  They showed as options even though I had long since deleted the apps. It bugged me so I poked around how to clean out old names.

  1. Just go into your home folder/Library/Preferences/
  2. Open the com.apple.iCal.plist file.
  3. Browse down to the key: PersistentMenu-lastUsedOpenFileAlarm
  4. You will find the old previous used apps listed under the numerical subkeys. Just be very careful and delete only the keys you mean to.

Automator & iCal – Scheduled Sending your Spouse your Weekly Calendar

by: George Starcher, Associate Editor

So I gave my wife my old G5 iMac a while back. I also installed BusySync. But does she look at the calendar? Nope. And you can imagine the look I get when I say “Well, it was on my Calendar.” And the response is “I won’t look in that.” So how to bring the information to her with the least amount of recurring effort on my part? Well, emailing it works since I know she reads that. Here is how you build an automator action to send a summary for the week for selected Calendars from iCal and have it run every Sunday night.

I was going to record this as audio for the show but then Victor told me how much Macworld  content video etc he has.  So I figure this is for those who read the blog.  A bonus if you will. (more…)

Macworld 2008 Keynote – What does it mean for the UK?

Written by Stu Helm – Contributing Editor from British Users of Mac Podcast

First of all, I wanted to say it was great to hear Victor got into the Keynote – I’m really ‘chuffed’ for you buddy! I know we’re going to get some great content from this, so Victor go for it!I thought you’d like to read my thoughts on how the announcements made by Steve Jobs at MacWorld 2008 have an impact on the Mac community here in the UK, because as you may well be aware we have a few differences in the services we have available, particularly with the iTunes Store. So I’m going to kick off with just that… (more…)

iPod Touch & iPhone – Remote Buddy Web Clip Icon

by: George Starcher, Associate Editor

I have been having fun with the updated iPod touch firmware. Tonight I decided I wanted to customize the webclip icon for Remote Buddy coming from my iMac. If you have Remote Buddy you probably bookmarked the Ajax interface so you can use it on your home network with relative ease. With v1.3 you can make a button on the touch screen desktop. But what if you want a nice icon instead of the ajax screenshot the iPod makes on its own?If you try this, make a backup copy of your remote buddy application first just in case.

  1. First I went to IOSpirit’s Web site for Remote Buddy.
  2. Next I grabbed that nice little graphic from the title banner top left of the remotes in the hat. Press command-shift-4 to get the screenshot crosshairs. I highlighted just icon itself and saved it to the desktop.
  3. Next I opened the image with Pixelmator that I got in the great current Macheist deal.
  4. Click on Image on the menu and select Image Size. Resize the image to 57×57. You may have to uncheck the box “Constrain Proportions” box so you can make it a full 57×57.
  5. Save the file as PNG format with the filename apple-touch-icon.png

Now the tricky part. How to get it so Remote Buddy can serve up the icon.

  1. I browsed to the Remote Buddy file in my Applications folder.
  2. Control-Click (aka right click)
  3. Choose “Show Package Contents”
  4. Click into the following directory: Contents->Resources->WebRemote
  5. Drag your apple-touch-icon.png file into that folder and close the window.
  6. Restart Remote Buddy, Pull up the Ajax page in your iPod Touch/iPhone web browser and add it to the desktop.

You should see your nice new Remote Buddy webclip icon.

*** UPDATE***Well they released a small update for Remote Buddy.  It includes their own webclip icon for the Ajax web interface.  I just wish they included HTTPS encryption.
