File Vault – Power down your Mac to close the Vault Door

by: George Starcher, Associate EditorA real nice video and paper was released today on bypassing hard drive encryption. Nice as in well done. Scary though. More important to the typical mac user is that it works against file vault. You can see the article over on News.com. The news.com article is good to check since it has a clean explanation, links to the PDF paper, an embedded copy of the YouTube video. More important to the typical mac user is that it has a link to a slide show on performing the process against file vault. The lesson here… If you rely on file vault to protect your data. Power down your Mac completely when left unattended or traveling while not in use. Sleep mode is not good enough.

IPod Shuffle Price cut and new model!

Filed under: Podcasts — Kreg @ 6:59 am

I personally like my Shuffle. It is light, and easy to carry. Now there are more reasons to like it. Apple today announced the 1gb model is now $49 bucks, and also introduced a 2gb model for $69. Not bad.

I am personally still waiting for price cuts on the iPod Touch which are rumored….

Replacement of a MacPro Logic Board (Pictures)

Had my MacPro repaired. They did as an “home service” under Apple Care. I was able to take some pictures. Thought some of you may want to see what the inside of a stripped MacPro looks like. All is well now and I’m back to 100%. Intersting that all that work had to be done to replace one (1) 1/8 Line In jack.

I also took a small about of low-res video footage. I’ll put that up soon too.

My resolution questions about Apple TV Take 2 Resolution answered

The good folks over at iLounge answered questions that I had about the difference between the movies you rent on your computer and those you rent on the Apple TV. This is very good reading and I personally thank them for their research.

Part of their conclusions are. . .

As of right now, it’s fairly obvious that Apple distributes its video content in only two general formats—“standard-definition” and “high-definition.” Because the company is dealing with the challenges of converting a back catalog of titles for viewing on higher-quality displays, “standard-definition quality” will vary with the title; for the time being, it’s safe to assume that the quality of any given standard-definition movie will be the same regardless of whether and how it is downloaded from Apple TV or iTunes.

AppleTV Take Two – My Take

by: George Starcher, Associate Editor

I was only able to update my AppleTV yesterday. We were at my Grandfather’s funeral this past week. He was 94 and had a full and varied life. He did all sorts of stuff. He even hung out with George Washington Carver. My grandfather knew so much about plants that some people think he had a college degree. Someone even thought he was a PhD once.  He was also a talented writer, civil engineer and photographer.

There are already plenty of posts on comparisons of the “HD” rentals vs real HD discs like Bluray etc. Here are somethings I noticed about the update.

I love the flickr integration. My dad got his photographic talent from my grandfather. You can see some of this work at http://www.flickr.com/photos/photophool/ Sure, you already knew about that. BUT did you know that you can make someone’s flickr or dotMac photo feed your AppleTV screen saver? I am not a bad photographer but I am nothing on the level of my dad. So just go into Settings->Screen Saver->Photos and pick the feed you want to use for your screen saver. You can even specify which flickr grouping to use such as Most Recent or any other groups your contact has setup.

They need to adjust the menus a little bit. In some spots in the interface you can circle back around from top to bottom. In others you cannot. I wish that were a consistent behavior. Anything to make a few less button presses.

I would also love the ability to sync over the contact lists for dotMac and Flickr from iTunes. It would let you set it up where you have a full keyboard and sync it over.

The other feature that was not hyped but I absolutely love is the additional of airtunes functionality. For some reason the AppleTV is cludgy feeling on keeping played podcasts up to date between itself and iTunes on my mac. Now I can just play from my iMac and stream it over. That also opens the door to use my Remote Buddy on my iPod touch as the remote instead of the Apple remote.

The rentals are simply addictive.  Instant gratification without the hassle of having to return a disc.  Worse if the rental place loses the disc and threatens to send you to collections over a disc they lost.  That is no longer a headache you have to risk.

I love the update and may have to buy my dad an AppleTV on his birthday.

Leopard 10.5.2 – Back to My Mac

by: George Starcher, Associate Editor

Just wanted to say, sweet! I updated both my iMac and my Powerbook. Now I can see my iMac every single time over my Sprint Mobile broadband card. When I get a chance I will check on a few hotspots. Since the update also fixed my iMac’s seeing other shares on my home lan I figure the fix must be related and all in all great for me all the way around.

*UPDATE* I tried it from my Aunt Lil’s house and it is working like a champ. I get shared drives and Screen Sharing every time. Now if iTunes library sharing just worked across it.

*FINAL UPDATE* I have found that Back to My Mac works consistently now for me no matter where I have tried it. That just rocks. One little thing I did figure out over the weekend about iTunes library sharing (streaming). I wrote a post on using Network Beacon plus tunneling the sharing over SSH over on my blog.
