Tonight co-host is Allison Sheridan from the NosillaCast . We had a blast talking about our favorite ways of finding software, the iPod Touch and what we do to push away from the keyboard once in a while. Or, what we don’t do. It was great having Allison on again.

    Hi Victor

Another great show! I really liked this week's quest, Allison was great and interesting to listen to. Keep up the good work! I'm already longing for next Sunday :-)

BTW: I seems you have a typing error in your show notes, I guess you meant Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/), not Everote

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for catching the typo. It's fixed.

I was listening to your Sunday podcast and while I love your show, I
have a different view of some of the items discussed. My intend is to
    add balance to the discussion.

    TM and the AEBS:
This software update does not appear to be complete. While it does
appear to work, people should be careful. Here are the reasons:
    a) Under About this Mac, the build number is an odd number that does
not look like a progression from the previous build.
    b) Also under About this Mac, the Copyright for OSX was changed from
2008 to 2007. Which makes me wonder about the health of this update.
    c) When you backup to a disk connected via USB to your computer the TM
software creates a directory entry at the root level of the disk and
inside that it creates a directory for each of your systems, inside
those it places your actual backups.
    d) When you backup instead using AEBS, it instead uses a sparse tree
which is fine since it is over the network. However the TM software
does not create the series of directories, instead of putting the
sparse tree inside of the directory structure as in C above, it writes
the sparse tree backup directly at the root of the disk. So each of
your systems are all being written at the root of the directory. This
is a bit odd as Apple likes to have everything work the same
regardless of different implementations. While it is possible that
there is a technical reason for having the sparse tree at the root
level, I am not aware of it and the manual does not document this
    behaviour.
    e) Apple does not support the use of TM to a AEBS. If you look at the
documentation for TM is makes no mention of such feature, none what so
ever, yet the software been out several days.
    f) Apple again shows that they do no support this feature if you look
at the AEBS documentation and manual. Neither mentions the ability of
    using TM.

I would seriously consider if it is safe to put your trust on this
    backup methodology.

    Safari pushed to Windows users:
    a) The Apple updater offers the software to the user and does not
forces the user to accept the file
    b) It is very easy for the user to remove the software if the user by
    mistake accepts the software
    c) Even if you were to consider it similar to spam, it would not
apply. Spam is unsolicited from someone you do not have a relationship
with. You and Apple have a relationship over the use of iTunes and
QuickTime. Apple is completely able to legally offer you any
information and product just like they do with emails.
    d) I have not looked at the EULA for the updater, but I bet that
somewhere in there it states that Apple can offer you other products,
    however I could be wrong.
    e) As you stated you are not a windows Safari user, which brings to
question if your are being objective due to your preference for other
browsers in a windows environment. Do not get angry about this, we as
humans are not always objective all I say is that sometimes one needs
to consider if our reactions are not just knee jerk reactions to an
    unexpected situation.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Thanks for the words, I always like to read and listen to different opinions. I would like more clarification for the statement you made that says “I would seriously consider if it is safe to put your trust on this backup methodology” do you mean my backup methodology who or what are you referring to?

I was talking in general. I was refering to anyone that maybe using TM over AEBS. At this time it is not clear that Apple intended to enable that capability and it does not appear to be complete, therefore there is risk. Since the AEBS and Time Capsule are probably sharing a lot of the code, it is possible Apple never intended to turn on this feature, the fact they have not add it to the products manual and the web site maybe telling us something.

Yo, great Freudian slip in there Victor. ;-) At about 6 minutes in you talked about how “Microsoft had spammed all the PC users out there…” Isn't our friend Apple the spammer in that Safari update issue? Keep up the great work, I enjoy the podcast.

LOL wow good ear. I did not even know I did that. Yes this time it's Apple that is to blame for the SPAM.
