Using SSH with your Mac to unlock your home.

It took a while for me to quit laughing today.  My wife says this resembles me.  In the spirit of our SSH series check out the below xkcd.com comic.

SSH to open your home.

Now all you have to do is SSH into your mac at home. At the terminal command line enter the following.

sudo osascript -e “set Volume 10″

say “Hey! I’m locked out downstairs.”

If you get an error you might try this instead.

sudo say “Hey! I’m locked out downstairs”

If nothing else works maybe just try open sesame. *chuckle*

*Update*

I actually tested this with Victor’s mac pro.  Since I had gotten an error I thought it didn’t work.  Until I saw Victor’s tweet about freaking out when his macpro spoke to him.  See below.  As emergency backup and to exchange files I have my own ssh keys to Victor’s macpro.  Egg on my face for not thinking it worked and went on to test with my laptop then write the post THEN notice he was wigging out.  *but it was darn funny*  I just hope he doesn’t hold onto the Apple baseball cap he got me for being bad.

That's the hacker ethic, test it on your friend's mac first.

I actually just tested the command locally in terminal. I wanted to see it give the same command line response on a remote mac. =) Surprisingly I got an error on his macpro. SO I went and got my laptop out and then sshd to my own imac.

So wait a minute, there was no way you could have known whether it really worked when you sent the command to Vic's mac right?

No. I wanted to be sure I wouldnt get some odd error because I was calling the say command from a remote connection before doing the blog post. If I had not gotten the error I would have im'd victor and told him it was me. =) I did in fact get an odd error from his mac pro. But did not see it when I replicated using my laptop to my imac. It was then I saw his tweet while I was writing the blog post.

Oh man. Imagine your kids using a mac mini as a media center and they are ignoring you when you tell them to take out the trash. You could loop a nag say command in the middle of the movie.

Hehe, awesome! Wait, you know Victor’s static IP? O_o

George has special access to my Mac due to him being on the show and as a part of a contingency plan. It's not access I would allow to anyone else.

It only works for me if I use apostrophes instead of parentheses around the 'set Volume 10'

Oh, that sounds mean but oh so darn funny. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when you issued the command on Victor's remote machine.

Oh it was funny for sure. The funny part is that George did not know i was here. He was just messing around. However I was and I was really freaking out. All in good fun but fun for sure.
