George Starcher and I talk about the state of Mac security. Bart does part 20 of the terminal series and George and I review TextExpander for the iPhone and iPod touch.

NOTE: During this episode George and I talk about trojans in general. We mention Clampi and it was pointed out that this exploit is only found in windows at this time. That is a true statement and I think listener Keith for pointing it out. However the discussion is in general about Trojan code can invade any system and we are not immune. George and I mention our point is not to spread Fear Uncertainty and Doubt , but it is to educate.

I always thoroughly enjoy your podcasts (and have just started listening / catching up on typicalshutterbug as well).

I just wanted to pick up on one of the comments (that I think was made during the show - or else was made recently by you). You and George are PGP users but have had to remove it completely on machines that you upgraded to 10.6. I've been trying to use PGP since the latter part of last year, but have been plagued by problems with it - mostly kernel panics when unplugging firewire drives, or slow downs when plugging them in. I tried it for a couple of weeks last year but simply had to remove it otherwise I was getting several kernel panics a day. I recently tried using it again (a more up to date version), but once again am now removing it due to kernel panics. Ironically, it is fine when I'm travelling (I don't tend to plug firewire drives in and out when on the road), but useless when I'm in my apartment continually plugging in and out of firewire drives being used for TIme Machine, super duper and so on. I just wish there was some competition to PGP, or that FileVault was less disruptive, or that I could trust myself to identify sensitive material and always put it in an Apple Disk Utility encrypted volume on the drive. Would welcome any views from you or George.
